Working Principle of Underfloor Heating Manifold

       

       An underfloor heating manifold is the core water distribution and control component of an underfloor heating system. Its primary function is to evenly distribute high-temperature hot water delivered from a boiler or mixing system to the underfloor heating branch pipes (PEX pipes) in each room. Simultaneously, it collects the low-temperature return water after heat dissipation and sends it back to the heat source equipment for reheating, enabling independent temperature and flow control for the underfloor heating in each room.

       Its working principle can be divided into three core stages: water distribution, water return, and precision control.

 

 Water Distribution Stage (Manifold Body)

       Hot water output from the boiler first enters the main inlet pipe of the manifold. Through multiple branch connectors, the main inlet pipe diverts the hot water to the underfloor heating branch pipes connected to each room. The flow speed and volume of each branch pipe can be initially adjusted via branch valves, ensuring balanced basic water distribution.

 

 Heat Dissipation & Water Return Stage (Collector Body)

       As hot water flows through the underfloor heating branch pipes in each room, it releases heat into the indoor space through floor radiation, causing the water temperature to drop. The low-temperature return water is then collected into the main return pipe of the manifold's collector, and uniformly transported back to the boiler or mixing system through the return pipe, completing a thermal cycle.

 

 Precision Control Stage (Linkage of Core Accessories, for Auto-thermostatic Models)

       Automatic temperature and flow regulation is achieved through core accessories, which is the key difference from ordinary manual manifolds:

       Electric Actuator: Receives signals from the room thermostat. When the indoor temperature reaches the set value, it electrically closes the branch valve to cut off the hot water supply to the room; when the temperature is below the set value, it automatically opens, realizing room-by-room constant temperature control.

       Thermostatic Cartridge: If integrated into the mixing system, it automatically adjusts the ratio of hot and cold water to maintain a stable temperature of the hot water entering the manifold (usually controlled at 40-50℃ to meet the requirements of underfloor heating systems), preventing damage to pipes or scalding caused by excessively high water temperature.

       Flow Meter: Displays the water flow of each branch in real time, facilitating the calibration of water volume in each room during commissioning to ensure uniform heat dissipation, and also helping to troubleshoot pipeline blockages and other issues in the later stage.

       An underfloor heating manifold is mainly composed of a water distribution manifold (for water supply), a water collection manifold (for water return), branch valves, air release valves, and drain valves.
