Ancient Civilization Period
Around 4000 BC, the Mesopotamians introduced clay sewers; In 3200 BC, the city of Uluk had the oldest known brick toilet built on a fired clay sewer; In 2400 BC, copper pipes appeared in Egypt; Ancient Rome introduced extensive aqueduct systems, wastewater removal, and the widespread use of lead pipes, with inscriptions on the pipes used to prevent water theft.

From the Middle Ages to modern times
After the fall of Rome, water supply and sanitation facilities stagnated or regressed for over 1000 years, until the development of modern densely populated cities made effective progress in the 1800s. In the 1800s, Philadelphia, Boston, and Montreal used wooden pipes.

In the modern era
From the late 1800s to around 1960, galvanized iron pipes were used for drinking water; Afterwards, copper pipes became popular, first soft copper pipes with horn shaped joints, and then rigid copper pipes using welded joints. After World War II, the use of lead in drinking water sharply decreased. After the emergence of durable plastic materials, plastic pipes have been widely used.
